If you’re planning to book one of the TakeTours trips, this blog post will help you make the right choice. I’ve booked with them three times, and in this post, I’ll share my recent experience and whether I recommend it or not. And just to be clear, this is not a sponsored post.

Traveling with parents always feels a little extra special, but also a bit of work, especially with Indian parents who have dietary restrictions. There’s nostalgia, comfort, and that wholesome feeling of watching them experience something beautiful; almost like gifting them memories. But there’s also the stress of planning everything to perfection, which ironically leaves more room for errors.

So, during our recent trip to the East Coast, we opted for a guided tour instead and booked a 3-Day Niagara Falls, Washington DC & Philadelphia Tour from New York for the three of us. Honestly, it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable, seamless, and scenic short getaways we’ve taken together. Meenakshi headed out on her own little adventure to explore the Northeast states, and if you’re curious about that journey, you can read more about it here.

TakeTours

If you’re someone who loves structured itineraries, no-stress planning, and maximizing your time, this is one of the easiest ways to cover some of the most iconic attractions on the East Coast in just a long weekend. And if you’re traveling with parents (especially those who appreciate comfort, Indian food options, and well-paced days), this tour is perfect.

This blog post covers our entire itinerary with real timings, honest thoughts, food recommendations, and what to expect.

Things I liked and disliked about this Guided Tour Experience

The East Coast is vast, and despite its great connectivity via public transit, the commute can be long and stressful, especially when someone has just traveled 20+ hours on a flight from India. So, we were looking for something simple, organized, and comfortable.

When you’re doing a multi-city trip, driving and coordinating everything yourself can add unnecessary stress. Tours like this take away the logistics so you can actually enjoy the journey together. Plus, they help everyone stay on schedule, follow the itinerary, and even socialize, speaking from my own experience 🤣. Plus, Niagara Falls had been on their wish list for a long time, and watching their excitement during Maid of the Mist, that memory alone made this trip worth it. ☺️

Things I loved:

  • No driving means you can enjoy the views, sleep, or read a book during your free time.
  • Indian food was available at each food court we stopped, which my parents instantly approved 😋.
  • Well-timed restroom breaks.
  • Smooth hotel check-in and check-out.
  • Covering 10+ iconic attractions in just 3 days.
  • Perfect pacing for my parents. The tours were not rushed but not slow either.

Things I didn’t love:

  • One of the hotels wasn’t up to the mark, and we had to go back and forth to get the room cleaned. Plus, the bathroom flush wasn’t working properly. The staff was prompt and helpful and resolved the problems quickly, but it was a long day, and it bothered us a bit.
  • They included only one stop in Philadelphia, and we saw it from the outside. I think this could have been better, or they could have added a few more spots to make the visit more meaningful.

Cost breakdown of our tour

We got the Buy 2 Get 2 offer for the 3-Day Niagara Falls, Washington DC, and Philadelphia Tour from New York/New Jersey, and paid a total of $980 for the three of us, out of which $296 was the base price, plus an additional $684 for the mandatory fees and attractions. Meenakshi didn’t join us, so I had to inform them before the trip, but the base price remained the same for the three of us.

Here’s what was included in $296

  • 2 nights hotel accommodation
  • City-to-city Transportation via air-conditioned bus
  • Professional Tour Guide
  • All taxes

Here’s what was included in $684, we paid additionally:

While going through the list of attractions, you’ll notice some are marked as optional and others as mandatory. It’s completely up to you which optional activities you choose but make sure to review the list before your tour begins, as payment for these will be collected upfront on the first day. All mandatory tours were free for children under 3 years.

  • Mandatory service fees: $15 per day per person for the tour guide and bus driver. The fee applies to all ages, including children and infants. – $135
  • Activities & Attractions:
    • Corning Glass Center + Niagara Falls Illumination Package (Mandatory) – $150 for three
    • Maid of the Mist – $99 for three
    • Whirlpool State Park + Lake Erie + Niagara Falls Observation Deck + Buffalo City Tour Package (Mandatory) – $150 for three
    • Washington DC In-depth Tour Package A (Mandatory) – $150 for three

Honestly, it was a steal deal, as we had to pay $326 per person to visit all these iconic spots.

  • Food (3 meals each day)  $250-300 approximately
We usually grabbed coffee from the hotel or the nearby Starbucks and paired it with a croissant for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, we headed to the closest Indian restaurant at the food court or strip mall where the tour stopped. I’ve added more details about each eatery under the respective sections. Overall, the food cost came to approximately $100 per day for three people.

Day-wise itinerary: Includes attractions, stay & restaurant details

Day 1: Exploring Philadelphia and Washington DC

7:30 AM – Departure from Jersey City (New Jersey)

We were staying at Hyatt House near Exchange Place, which was very close to the pickup point for TakeTours. Upon reaching the spot, we checked-in our luggage on the bus and were given a card with our group number. We were Group 3 among 12 other groups. The tour bus left right on time, and honestly, tours that stick to schedules are my favorite. Nothing tests my patience more than waiting on latecomers, but our group was punctual (thankfully!).

The bus was clean, the seats were comfortable, and the guide gave us a quick overview of the day while we settled in. He walked us through the mandatory fees, optional tour add-ons, food choices, and even helped us finish the payments on the spot.

Pro tip: I recommend going through their list of optional tours before the trip, as you won’t get much time to decide once you’re on the bus.

The morning drive was smooth and scenic, with little pockets of fall colors peeking through (we traveled in November). My mom pointed out every orange tree she spotted (classic mom behavior 😂), while also enjoying the narration from our guide. My parents loved this style of travel because they got to learn fun facts along the way without having to Google anything themselves.

9:30 AM – Independence Hall in Philadelphia (30 mins)

Our first stop of the trip was Independence Hall, an iconic landmark. No visit to the East Coast is complete without seeing this place, because this is where it all began: the birthplace of the independent America we know today.

The guide made two stops: one at Independence Hall and another at the Liberty Bell. Both were outside stops, where he explained the history and significance of each site. If you want to visit them from the inside, check out my Philadelphia blog post. And if you’re looking for a more in-depth Philadelphia experience, TakeTours also has a longer tour option available.

Independence Hall looked beautiful under the morning light, and the Liberty Bell carries such symbolic weight. There’s something grounding about starting a trip at the very place where American independence was signed.

We clicked a few quick family photos, stretched our legs, and continued onward.

10:50 AM – Lunch in Delaware (50 mins)

Our next stop was the Biden Welcome Center, a food court in Delaware. This food court didn’t have Indian options, but it did have Panda Express, so we were good. We ordered the 3-entrée plate combo and picked Orange Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, and Honey Walnut Shrimp. It came with two sides, and we chose chow mein and fried rice. The portion was generous enough for the three of us, and the food tasted great.

Before leaving, we also stopped by a convenience store to restock our road-trip snack bag and pick up a souvenir, because of course we had to make the most of the tax-free shopping, right?

2:45 PM – Lincoln Memorial & Korean War Memorial (30 mins)

Our first stop in DC was the Lincoln Memorial. It was a three-hour drive, but it didn’t feel too strenuous thanks to the comfortable seats and the beautiful fall colors along the way. The weather wasn’t the best, cloudy and grey but at least it didn’t rain.

The Lincoln Memorial is dedicated to the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. The structure is massive, with beautiful white columns and a grand statue of the president at its center. I was instantly taken by the stunning architecture, the towering sculpture, the Reflecting Pool stretching out in front, and people quietly absorbing the history around them. The whole atmosphere was impressive and deeply moving.

Next to this was the Korean War Memorial, which was incredibly moving with its striking sculptures of soldiers. My parents spent a few moments taking in all the details, their generation connects deeply with historical memorials, and it was beautiful to watch them experience it.

3 PM – US Capitol Building and the White House (30 mins)

We visited DC during the government shutdown, which meant many places were closed. Because of that, several stops ended up being quick drive-by or hop-on-hop-off visits, just enough time for photos. On regular days, they offer an in-depth Capitol tour that gives you a full understanding of the building and its history.

The Capitol building wasn’t as big as some of the other state capitol buildings, which honestly surprised me. Did you know the Texas State Capitol is bigger than this one? Nevertheless, the dome looked beautiful glowing against the afternoon sky, and the cool breeze felt so refreshing after hours on the road.

We made another quick stop at the White House. Honestly, no visit to Washington DC is complete without this! Although we didn’t get to see it up close because of a security restriction, the view was still nice enough. My dad zoomed in with his phone camera like a pro photographer.

6 PM – Dinner at an Indian Restaurant (1 hour)

While booking your tour, you’ll see an option to add the “Maryland Buffet Dinner.” If you choose this, they’ll take you to a seafood buffet restaurant, which is great for someone like me who loves Asian food. But I was traveling with my parents, who specifically wanted Indian food. Thankfully, every food stop had at least one Indian restaurant, so we were happy.

Dining at Madras Palace was one of the highlights for my parents; comfort food after a long day of travel always hits differently. We had warm rotis, dal, paneer, rice, and dosa, which was simple, satisfying, and exactly what we needed.

7:30 PM – Hotel Check-In

After a long day of travel, we finally reached the hotel at 7:30 PM. The check-in was shockingly smooth, despite being part of a large group. The guide handed out the keys so efficiently that we were in our rooms within minutes. However, the hotel itself was a bit shabby, the corridors smelled, and our bathroom flush wasn’t working properly.

We conveyed this feedback to the guide, so hopefully they’ll choose a better hotel or ensure the rooms are hygienic going forward. Once the issue was resolved, we showered, relaxed, and called it a night.

P.S.: I wish I had photos to show… but honestly, I was too exhausted to even think about taking any. Sleep won.

Day 2: Corning Museum, Buffalo and Niagara Falls

7:15 AM – Breakfast and starting for the day

After a good night’s sleep, we started the day with crisp sunshine. We grabbed a quick breakfast from Starbucks, our usual coffee and croissant, and hopped onto the bus. We were headed to the Corning Museum of Glass, which was a long drive, but we had enough snacks and supplies to keep us busy on the road.

Whenever I travel with my parents, I automatically switch into “planner mode,” making sure their water bottles are filled; they’ve eaten enough, and they’re comfortable. But I also secretly enjoy it 🥹.

The morning drive toward Corning was scenic and surprisingly calming. The fall foliage kept peeking through the windows.

11:30 AM – Corning Museum of Glass (2.5 hours)

The Corning Museum of Glass is a 100-year-old establishment that holds the world’s largest collection of glass art. It features beautifully curated glass sculptures, intricate art pieces, ancient artifacts, and even live glassmaking demonstrations. The museum is spread across two floors, with the main highlights on the first floor (the mandatory attraction for the tour) and the second-floor museum galleries, which you can explore for an additional $25 fee.

The main floor includes several interesting sections, the museum shop, the studio where you can watch live glassmaking, and the cafeteria.

This stop turned out to be much more interesting than I expected! My mom loved the delicate glasswork displays, while my dad enjoyed reading the history behind each piece. It’s a calm, slow-paced museum that doesn’t overwhelm you, making it perfect for travelers of all ages.

We also grabbed a quick bite at the cafeteria, some pizza slices and a bowl of broccoli cheddar soup, which was surprisingly delicious.

4 PM – Buffalo City Tour (1 hour)

Next on the itinerary was a fun city tour of Buffalo. We walked around the Buffalo Naval Park, learning about the city’s naval history and the massive ships stationed on Lake Erie, including the famous USS The Sullivans. The city’s architecture was also impressive. I’ve been to Buffalo before and had the BEST Buffalo sauce pizza, but it’s always fun to revisit a city and discover something new.

We got an overview of Buffalo’s historic buildings and major landmarks, which added a nice cultural layer to the trip before heading back into nature.

5 PM – Whirlpool State Park (1.5 hours)

Our next stop was one of the most peaceful moments of the entire trip. Watching the Niagara River and its dramatic whirlpools with fall colors in the backdrop and a beautiful golden-hour hue was nothing short of a movie scene. The swirling water, the steep gorge walls, and the kind of view that feels truly cinematic, it was breathtaking. We spent around an hour here, walking around, taking photos, and soaking in the scenery. My parents absolutely loved this stop.

There was also a hot air balloon experience near the state park that gives you an aerial view of the area. It’s not like a traditional hot air balloon ride, it’s more of a static, tethered one, but I’m sure the view is incredible. If my parents didn’t have a fear of heights, we would’ve definitely done it!

6:30 PM – Dinner and Niagara Falls view at Night (30 mins)

We made a 50-minute dinner stop at the One Niagara Food Court, which had an Indian restaurant called Taj Mahal Cuisine. We ordered the classic Tikka Masala. The food wasn’t the finest, but at least it was something familiar, and it definitely made my Indian parents happy.

Finally, we headed to the most awaited spot of the trip, the mighty Niagara Falls! My parents’ first reaction was a simple but heartfelt “wow.” In that moment, all our travel fatigue just disappeared. Niagara Falls felt magical. The mist rising, the roar of the water, the soft evening light, it all felt surreal.

My parents stood quietly for a few moments, just taking it in. And honestly, that’s the kind of memory I’ll hold onto forever.

8 PM – Hotel Check-in

Our Buffalo hotel was huge and so much nicer than the previous one. The rooms were modern, clean, and comfortable. The check-in was smooth, and we rested well with so much excitement for the next day.

Day 3: Maid of the Mist and journey back to New York

8 AM – Departure to Maid of the Mist

This was the final day of our trip, the moment everything had been leading up to, and it did not disappoint.

We began at Niagara Falls State Park and saw the mighty falls in broad daylight. The beauty was absolutely mesmerizing. The Cave of the Winds was closed, but the Observation Deck and the Maid of the Mist were still running. However, when my sister-in-law visited in April, both the Cave of the Winds and Maid of the Mist were closed because of snow. Yes, it snowed in April! We even experienced a heavy snow blizzard in Arizona once. Who would believe that story?

Anyway, the boarding began, and we were handed in pink ponchos. Usually, the ponchos are red, but the company was celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so the pink ones were part of their campaign.

The boat ride was thrilling, but the real magic began when we started inching closer to the falls. The American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls looked dreamy with seagulls flying all around, and the Horseshoe Falls, the main highlight, was simply mind-blowing. The water spray hits your face, the wind picks up, and suddenly you’re surrounded by the thunder of the falls. It’s a moment that feels both powerful and unreal.

My mom held my hand the entire time. My dad kept saying “Wow” every few seconds. And I… honestly? I had goosebumps.

It’s one thing to see Niagara Falls from the viewpoints. It’s another to be that close, to feel the water droplets on your face, to hear the roar, to sense the raw power of nature. This 20-minute boat ride is easily one of the most memorable travel experiences I’ve had with my parents.

I highly recommend bringing your parents here. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

12 PM: Heading back to New York

The tour ended at 12 PM, and we began our journey back toward New York. We were dropped off at Buffalo Airport since we had a flight to Chicago, but you can choose to head back to New York or New Jersey depending on your itinerary.

Tips for This Tour (Must-Read)

  • Make sure you mention your food restrictions at the beginning of the tour, because the buffet dinner included on one of the days is paid upfront. If you’re not willing to opt for the buffet, which is at an Asian restaurant, you can skip it and head to the Indian restaurant next door for dinner. If you’re traveling with parents, this option is far more convenient than the seafood buffet.
  • Carry ample snacks and water (at least a 1L bottle per person), as some days involve long driving hours.
  • Expect quick stops in Washington DC and Philadelphia; these aren’t in-depth city tours but more of a highlights experience. However, you can always pick a different package based on your needs; they have plenty of options.
  • Maid of the Mist gets you very wet, so I recommend carrying a waterproof cover to protect your phone. The ponchos help, but the mist is powerful!
  • Wear comfortable shoes, as there’s moderate walking throughout the trip.
  • Since it’s a multi-state itinerary, bring layers; weather can change quickly from one state to another.
  • If possible, sit on the left side of the bus; you’ll get better city views on some of the routes.

Would I Recommend This Tour?

Absolutely! One of the main reasons is how cost-effective it is, especially for people traveling from India. My sister and brother-in-law did both their East Coast and West Coast tours with them and were very happy with how affordable everything was. Moreover, if you’re traveling with parents or simply want a stress-free way to see multiple destinations, this is a great way to do it.

The pacing was great, the hotels were comfortable, the itinerary was clear, and the guides were professional. But beyond all that, what made it special for me was watching my parents enjoy themselves, from the museums to the memorials to the big finale at Niagara Falls.

Sometimes, the best trips are not the ones filled with luxury or adventure, but the ones where you get to slow down, sit together on a bus, talk, laugh, and create memories in unexpected moments.

If Niagara Falls has been on your list, and especially if you want an easy long-weekend getaway, this is a fantastic option!

FAQs about TakeTours

Where does the tour start?

They have multiple departure stops in both New York and New Jersey. You can pick the one that’s closest to your hotel or the airport. For us, it was the Jersey City pickup; for my sister-in-law, it was the New York Midtown stop.

Is it suitable for parents or older travelers?

100% yes! The tour is not rushed at all, doesn’t involve excessive walking, and includes frequent breaks. It’s very parent-friendly.

How long is the driving?

Quite a lot! This is a road-heavy itinerary. But with a comfortable bus, good AC, and regular breaks, it never felt difficult or tiring.

Do you get enough time at each stop?

It’s a quick highlights tour, so most stops are short photo breaks rather than deep explorations. This worked well for our itinerary. But if you want more time at each attraction, you can choose one of their in-depth tour packages (like my sister-in-law did) and enjoy each place more fully.

Is Indian food easy to find?

Yes! Except for the lunch food court on Day 1, every other food court or strip mall we visited had Indian restaurants; super convenient if you’re traveling with parents or have dietary preferences.
