Free Things to Do in Seattle

In this section, I’ll cover some of the best free things you can do in the city. Some of these are my personal favorites, especially the cultural events happening at the Armory, where I always end up discovering something new.

Seattle is truly a melting pot of cultures, and you’ll often find festivals and community celebrations happening year-round. You can also follow me on my Seattle Food & Outdoors YouTube or TikTok for the latest event updates.

Here are some of the top free things you can do in Seattle:

Free Museum Days

seattle museum guide

Seattle has a plethora of museums, ranging from informative to downright quirky. If you’re a museum buff, this is a fantastic opportunity to explore them without spending a dime. Many museums across Seattle offer free admission on the first Thursday of every month, making it one of the best ways to experience the city’s cultural scene. Some popular museums that participate include the Seattle Art Museum and the Museum of Pop Culture. You can also check out my Seattle museum blog post for a list of museums that are free to enter any day.

Community Art Walks

If you love supporting local artists, art walks are a great way to discover new talent and become part of Seattle’s creative community. The Belltown Art Walk is held on the second Friday of every month, transforming neighborhood galleries, studios, and businesses into vibrant art spaces. Similarly, Pioneer Square Art Walk takes place on the first Thursday of every month, making it easy to explore local art throughout the city.

Festivals at the Armory, Seattle Center

The Seattle Center Armory is a hub for cultural celebrations throughout the year. From the Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival to Seattle French Fest and Diwali celebrations, there’s always something happening. These festivals often feature a mix of music, dance, cultural performances, artisan stalls, and food, bringing together communities from around the world. You can check the upcoming events on the Seattle Center website and mark your calendar for the ones that interest you.

Coffee Tasting Sessions

Seattle’s indie coffee scene is huge, and with that come some fun experiences like free coffee tasting sessions and even the occasional coffee rave hosted by local cafes. If you enjoy coffee or want to learn more about it, these sessions are a great way to understand the journey from bean to cup. Two of my favorite places hosting free tastings are Black Arrows Coffee and Caffe Vita at KEXP.

The Spheres

Amazon Spheres is a unique conservatory cum office space owned by Amazon and is open to the public on select days. You can visit this lush indoor rainforest, grab a coffee, and enjoy being surrounded by cloud-forest plants while taking a break from the city’s bustle.

Paid Experiences & Activities in Seattle Worth-trying

Immersive Experiences

Immersive experiences are a new kind of entertainment that’s quite popular in Seattle. Experiences include walking into your favorite movie or T.V show set or thematic light and sound shows. They are interactive and visually engaging that feel almost like stepping into another world. Some of my favorites in the city are:

  • Bubble Planet (All year round) – A playful, interactive experience filled with giant bubbles, colorful projections, and sensory rooms designed to spark curiosity and creativity. It’s a fun experience for both adults and kids. Use my code MYLENS10 to get 10% OFF your order.
  • Astra Lumina (Seasonal) – A magical nighttime immersive light and sound experience through illuminated pathways, celestial-themed installations, and atmospheric music. It typically runs seasonally during fall and winter at the Seattle Chinese Garden. Use my code MYLENS10 to get 10% OFF your order.
  • Themed Experiences (Seasonal) – There are plenty of other rotating themed exhibits that happen year-round, like the Titanic experience, Stranger Things experience, and many more that happen seasonally. You can check out more such experiences here.

Walking Tours & Guided Experiences

Walking tours are one of my favorite ways to learn about a city. You get a deeper perspective of a city, plus a local point of view that might get missed when you explore a city on your own. Hence, I recommend taking one of these walking tours to get to know Seattle’s culture, history, and food scene better.

  • Pike Place Market Food Tours – A guided food tour through Pike Place Market is a fantastic way to sample local specialties and learn about the market’s history. The tours range from seafood tasting tours highlighting fresh Pacific Northwest seafood to plant-based food tours showcasing the city’s strong vegan food scene.
  • Underground Donut Tours – A fun way to explore Seattle while sampling some of the city’s best donuts. You will visit several local bakeries and donut shops across downtown neighborhoods while learning about Seattle.
  • Beneath the Streets – This is one of the most popular tours in Seattle that both locals and tourists love. I have been on this tour twice and find the stories and alleyways fascinating every time. While on the tour, you walk through Seattle’s historic underground passageways and listen to stories about the city’s early days and the events that shaped modern Seattle.
  • Ghost Tours – If you enjoy spooky stories and hidden history, a ghost tour through downtown Seattle and Pike Place Market reveals eerie legends, haunted buildings, and chilling local lore.
  • Sailing on Elliott Bay – No Seattle visit is complete without exploring the waters, and it gets even better on a sail. A scenic sailing experience across Elliott Bay provides some of the best views of the Seattle skyline, Puget Sound, and surrounding mountains. Moreover, you get to do fun things like releasing the sail and even steering the sailboat.

Fun Games & Entertainment

ifly-seattle

If you’re looking for something playful and social to do, Seattle has plenty of activity-based entertainment options. From mini golf to late-night arcade gaming parlors. My favorite thing to do is head to Capitol Hill on a Wednesday evening and enjoy half-off arcade game night at Bowlero followed by unlimited bowling until 11 PM and end the day with delicious street food like NOLA Dogs, tacos, and dessert from Voodoo Donut.

  • Topgolf – A popular golfing chain located in Renton. They offer a modern twist on golfing with interactive driving ranges, food, drinks, and music, making it a fun group activity even if you’ve never played golf before.
  • Monster Mini Golf – Another fun take on golf is trying the monster-themed mini golf in Bellevue. This features a glow-in-the-dark indoor mini golf space with arcade games, VR, and mini bowling.
  • Axe Throwing – Axe throwing is one of my new favorite activities, especially with friends. It’s always fun to watch your friend swinging an axe in a totally random direction. There are several venues across Seattle that you can visit, including my favorite in Capitol Hill. They have trained instructors to help you learn and play the sport safely.
  • Indoor Skydiving – If you want to give skydiving a try without the stress of jumping off a plane, iFLY is a fun experience you can try! It lets you experience the sensation of skydiving in a vertical wind tunnel, minus the stress.
  • Bowling & Arcade – The Garage in Capitol Hill combines bowling lanes, arcade games, pool tables, and a lively atmosphere. It’s one of my favorite places to hang out, but you can also explore the late-night arcade bars of Capitol Hill or go to nearby Dave & Busters.

Creative Workshops & Art Experiences

A great way to spend your time in a city is to indulge in some creativity. It’s a fun activity to do with friends and also bring home something unique. I have a dedicated art wall to display my and Abhi’s artwork at home, and we have a blast learning new skills in these classes. Seattle’s creative scene is huge with so much variety at hand. From glass fusing to tufting, these hands-on workshops are a great way where you can learn a new skill. Here are some fun art activities you can do in Seattle.

  • Glass FusingMolten Glassworks offers beginner-friendly workshops where you can create your own fused glass artwork. The studio is in Woodinville and offer Sip n Fuse classes, which is a fun activity to do with your friends.
  • Tufting Workshops – Learn how to make your own tufted rug in a guided workshop, a surprisingly relaxing and creative activity. Moreover, you bring home a handmade rug that you can proudly show-off. For this, I recommend heading to Tuft Ruft located in Pioneer Square.
  • Mosaic Art Classes – Mosaic workshops allow you to design colorful decorative pieces using glass, ceramic, and tile fragments. The studio is located in Belltown where you make a stunning Turkish table lamp, while sipping hot Turkish tea.
  • Glassblowing – Glassblowing workshops provide the chance to create your own glass ornaments or artwork while learning about Seattle’s strong glass art tradition. You can try this at Glasshouse Studio in Pioneer Square or at Seattle Glassblowing Studio in Belltown.
  • Splatter & Dart Art – Paint splatter and dart-throwing art experiences are a messy but fun way to create abstract artwork. Studios I recommend visiting are Wicked Rae’s in West Seattle, Paint Away in Redmond and Creatively Yours in Bellevue.

Cooking & Mixology Classe

If you love to bond over cooking or want to learn the art behind making pastas or even cheese, this is a great way to do so. There are plenty of chef-led cooking classes happening in Seattle where you can learn the craft and meet fellow foodies in the city.

  • Cooking Classes – Say goodbye to restaurant food because by the end of this class you’ll learn how to prepare restaurant-style dishes from scratch. The class is led by a chef who guides you through the entire process, plus you get to eat what you make, which means more delicious food to take back home. Here are some classes I recommend in Seattle, ranging from crafting your own Ravioli to making Fettuccine & Pesto Pasta from Scratch to learning the basics of making Mozzarella and Ricotta cheese.
  • Creative Cocktail Workshops – Mixology classes teach you how to craft cocktails while learning about flavor balance, techniques, and garnishing. You can take one of the classes led by professional mixologists and learn the basics of mixology. A fun alternative is to experiment with mixology like a mad scientist at the Mad Scientist Cocktail and Mocktail Lab.

Intimate Concerts & Shows

For music lovers looking for something more personal than large arenas, Seattle has some unique concert experiences, like candlelight concert inside a church to historic steam ships. We’ve discovered some new local artists through these concerts that have become our favorites, like Oranj Goodman and Nick Drummond. Moreover, you can also watch entertaining shows like improv and stand-up comedy.

  • Candlelight Concerts – Candlelight Concerts feature live classical music performed in candlelit venues, often highlighting themes like film scores, jazz, or famous composers. They have a plethora of options, from the classics like Hans Zimmer (music composer for movies like Interstellar and Pirates of the Caribbean) to Indian artists like A.R Rehman and Arijit Singh to bands like Pink Floyd and Imagine Dragons
  • Theater at Pike Place – The Market Theater, famous for the nearby Gum Wall, hosts improv comedy shows and performances throughout the week.
  • Sofar Sounds – Sofar Sounds hosts intimate live music performances in unique venues, with artists revealed shortly before the event.

Like I mentioned earlier, this is an ever-growing list, as I will keep adding more as I come across new events and experiences in Seattle. But for more real-time info, I recommend following my Seattle food and outdoors channel on YouTube and TikTok.
