It’s one of the largest cities in Washington, surrounded by the best of what this state has to offer. Whether you’re chasing daffodil and tulip blooms in spring, alpine wildflowers in summer, golden foliage in fall, or a snow dusted fairy tale town in winter, the Pacific Northwest has a day trip perfectly timed for every season.
I’ve spent years exploring the region with my camera, and these 15 destinations are the ones I keep coming back to and can’t recommend enough!
From ferry rides to island escapes, mountain passes to waterfront towns, this guide is your go to seasonal roadmap. Best part? Most of these are within 1-3 hours from Seattle, so you’re back home before midnight with a full memory card and a happy heart.

Skagit Valley 🌸

Skagit Valley is just an hour north of Seattle and transforms into a floral paradise every spring. March to early May is the best time to visit Skagit Valley, as you’ll be able to see the blooms as well as one of the largest migrations in Washington, the Snow Geese. Bainbridge Island 🌲

Bainbridge Island is a favorite among locals and offers some of the best views of Seattle from the water. The ferry ride is fun, and the walkable downtown is home to some of the best restaurants and art galleries. The island is also home to many award-winning wineries, local art galleries, and the beloved Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. North Cascades National Park ☀️ 🍁

North Cascades, also known as the “American Alps,” is one of the most dramatic national parks in the country, with over 300 glaciers and stunning turquoise lakes. You can drive up to Diablo Lake, which will make you question if you’re still in Washington. Mount Rainier National Park ☀️ 🍁

Mount Tahoma, also known as Mount Rainier, is the crown jewel of Washington. It is the tallest peak in the state and one of the most massive volcanic peaks in the country. Although the park is accessible year-round, summer is when the subalpine meadows at Paradise burst into wildflower bloom, creating some of the most breathtaking hiking scenery in the entire Pacific Northwest.

Olympic National Park 🌸 ☀️

Few places in the USA pack so much diversity into one destination, Olympic National Park is one of them. From ancient temperate rainforests and wild Pacific coastline to alpine meadows, you can experience it all in a single day trip. Woodinville Wine Country ☀️

Woodinville is Seattle’s most accessible wine escape and is home to over 130 wineries and tasting rooms. While wineries remain open year-round, summer is the best time to explore the area. The days are longer, making it easier to hop between wineries. Moreover, the concerts at Chateau Ste. Michelle are among the best in Washington.

Tacoma 🌲

Tacoma is Seattle’s underrated neighbor and makes a great day trip spot if you’re looking for something closer. Leavenworth ❄️ 
🌟 Highlight: Stunning views, cosy downtown and Bavarian food | Distance: 🚗 2h 14m or 🚝 3h 22m
There’s nothing quite like pulling into Leavenworth and feeling like you’ve been transported to a Bavarian village in the Alps. This charming mountain town isn’t just a Christmas destination it’s wonderful in both winter and summer. The drive into town is absolutely gorgeous during summer along the blue Snoqualmie River. Winter drives can be challenging, but the town is also accessible by train.
Poulsbo 🌲

🌟 Highlight: Little Norway of Washington | Distance: ⛴️ 30m ferry + 🚌 35m bus
Nicknamed “Little Norway,” Poulsbo is a storybook Scandinavian inspired waterfront village on the Kitsap Peninsula that charms every visitor. Stroll the marina side boardwalk, duck into bakeries for fresh lefse and Viking sized cinnamon rolls, and stop by the locally loved Sluy’s Bakery, a Poulsbo institution.
Port Townsend ❄️ 🌸

Bellingham 🌲

Bellingham is a laid back, walkable college town with incredible outdoor access, a thriving brewery scene, and one of the most scenic coastal drives in the state. Whatcom Falls Park, the vibrant Fairhaven Village district, and views of the San Juan Islands from Larrabee State Park round out a seriously full day trip.
Crystal Mountain ❄️

Bremerton 🌲

Bremerton is Puget Sound’s naval town with a surprisingly rich and evolving identity, think waterfront murals, a growing food scene, and fascinating military history. The USS Turner Joy, a decommissioned Navy destroyer right on the waterfront, is one of the most unique attractions in Western Washington.
