Every August, I do the same thing. I check the smoke map, throw a headlamp and a fleece in the car, and point it toward a mountain. Five years of living in Washington have taught me one stubborn little truth: if you can only visit the state’s national parks once, do it in August. That’s not a tourism-board line, that’s just my honest take after doing this, badly and then well, for half a decade.
