In the summer of 2018, I came across a picture of a blue lane decorated with colourful pots on Instagram. The image instantly caught my attention. I went straight to my friend, who is an avid traveller to enquire about the place. “Aah Chefchaouen!” she said. The conversation happened a year ago. Who knew I that would end up visiting it next year!

True story!

About Chefchaouen

blue-lanes-of-chefchaouen

The ‘Blue Pearl’ is what the locals call it, a beautiful city hidden in the lap of Rif Mountains. This place recently gained its popularity over the internet and now attracts millions of tourists every year. If you wish to avoid the crowd, then head to the city between August and March or else be prepared to get photobombed.

How to reach Chefchaouen?

Tangier is the closest city to Chefchaouen. You can opt for a day excursion to Chefchaouen by spending a night in Tangier, or you can stay in Chefchaouen to experience the nightlife.

Best way!

The best way to explore the city is by taking a walking tour with a local. It is because the Medina is like a maze, and you might end up circling the same street as I did!

5 Things you can do on a day trip to Chefchaouen

Explore the charming blue lanes of Medina

Explore the photogenic alleys of the Old Medina and get astonished by its beauty. There are plenty of decorated houses and doorways to get that perfect Instagram shot! You would cross a plethora of bakeries, souvenirs shops and cats while exploring the Medina. Unlike any other Medinas in the country, this one is less populated and a great place to go for a leisure walk.

Shop (or Window Shop) at the mini Bazaars and Souk

While exploring the beautiful lanes, you would come across many shops selling rugs, woollen clothes, handmade wooden souvenirs, spices and paint powder. Great place to splurge. You can give bargaining a shot but don’t push too hard as it might offend the locals.

Visit the Kasbah Museum

Surrounded by the lush Andalusian Garden resides the Kasbah Museum, also known as the Ethnographic Museum. A place where you get a deeper understanding of the city and its culture.

Try delicacies from the local bakeries and cafes

Hike to the Spanish Mosque

The Spanish Mosque is where you get the most incredible view of the city. The hike is merely half an hour from the city through a tiny Olive orchard. While you’re here, don’t forget to watch the gorgeous sunset.
