India is a diverse country, and when it comes to travel, there is so much that you can explore. I’ve been to the hills, explored the beaches, traversed the forests and the cities. But what I’ve noticed is that only a few get their fair share of fame, and the rest remain unexplored or underrated. So here’s a list of some underrated and a few famous places that you can explore.

I have a long list of places that I highly recommend you to visit in India. I have segregated them by type that I will be sharing as separate posts in the coming weeks. Starting with mountains and sharing a list of top 5 recommendations.

Wayanad, Kerala

Wayanad is a rural district in Kerala famous for vast orchards, caves, a gushing river, a Wildlife Sanctuary, Asia’s second-largest earth dam and beautiful weather. Head here if you love the amalgamation of adventure and rejuvenation.

Best time to visit – October to May
Nearest Airport – Karipur International Airport, Kozhikode
Nearest Bus Stand – Kozhikode (KSRTC buses)
Nearest Railway Station – Not connected to rail network.

Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Spiti Valley is a cold desert valley in Himachal Pradesh bordering the majestic Ladakh. It is slowly gaining popularity, especially among the north-Indians. This beautiful valley is home to one of the most stunning monasteries in India and inhabited villages. It is often clubbed with Lahaul a neighbouring district that has now merged with Spiti.

Best time to visit – October to February and March to June
Nearest Airport – Bhuntar Airport, Kullu (domestic) & Chandigarh International Airport
Nearest Bus Stand – Manali
Nearest Railway Station – Joginder Nagar

Darjeeling, West Bengal

One of my favourite hill stations of all time and a must-visit for chai lovers! Darjeeling offers pristine tea gardens, lip-smacking food, thrilling ropeway rides over the tea gardens, craft and a plethora of flora & fauna. While you’re here, you can also head to a tiny neighbouring hill station called Kalimpong to make the most of your time here.

Nearest Railway Station – New Jalpaiguri Railway Station

Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu

Kodaikanal is another underrated hill town nestled in the Western Ghats. It is known for its naturally formed granite rocks, breathtaking waterfalls, lakes and pristine valleys. Alternatively, you can head to Ooty, a gorgeous resort town in the Western Ghats. It is called the “Queen of Hills” and is home to India’s only working steam railway line. Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir

chandanwari-pahalgamSrinagar is not just another hill town. It has a vibe of its own. Residing on the bank of the Jhelum River and surrounded by snowcapped mountains. This place is truly a paradise on earth and is a must-visit at least once. While you’re here stay in a houseboat on the Dal lake, ride the world’s highest Gondola at Gulmarg, trek through the Chinar and Oak forests in Pahalgam and explore the gardens of Srinagar.
