The first time I flew Lufthansa was in June 2022 when we traveled from Mumbai to Seattle via Frankfurt. In this post, I’m breaking down everything from the in-flight experience and food to the layover and overall value for money, especially helpful if you’re planning a long-haul journey between India and the USA.

Lufthansa Flight Details & Route

We flew on a Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 from Mumbai to Seattle with a layover in Frankfurt. The first leg being a red-eye helped us get some rest, while the second leg was a long daytime flight. We booked a one-way flight, hence the price was slightly higher, but still cheaper than the other airlines at that time.

  • Route: Mumbai → Frankfurt → Seattle
  • First leg: ~8 hours 59 minutes (red-eye flight)
  • Departure: 2:40 AM from Mumbai
  • Arrival: 8:00 AM in Frankfurt
  • Layover: 2 hours 40 minutes
  • Second leg: ~10 hours 35 minutes (day flight)
  • Arrival in Seattle: 12:20 PM

In-Flight Experience: Seats, Food & Entertainment

The flight had three seats per row, unlike United, which offered slightly better seating space. The boarding process was smooth, and the flight attendants were kind and friendly. Overall, the in-flight experience was comfortable and seamless for economy class.

The seats were comfortable, and we were all given a blanket and a pillow. The legroom was decent even for a tall person, making it a fairly comfortable long-haul journey.

The first thing I always check after settling in is the entertainment system, it’s a non-negotiable for a long flight. Thankfully, it was working well and had a great selection of the latest and popular movies and TV shows. They also provide wired earplugs, which is convenient.

Both of our flights included three meals. On the first flight, we were served two snacks and one main meal, while the second flight included two main meals and one snack. The meal schedule depends on the timing of your flight. Since our first flight was at night, we were served dinner followed by a light breakfast. The food included a brownie for dessert, salads, and a carb-heavy main like pasta. A cold snack was served between meals, along with beverage service offered three times.

Everything felt consistent and well-organized, which is exactly what you want on a 19+ hour journey.

Why We Chose Lufthansa

We mainly chose Lufthansa because it was the most affordable option at the time. We don’t usually stick to one airline and prefer booking based on price and convenience.

That said, I flew Lufthansa again in 2024 from Delhi to Seattle via Munich, and the experience was very similar in terms of comfort and service. That time, I had a 9-hour layover, which I spent entirely at the airport (you can watch that full experience on my channel!).

Frankfurt Layover Experience

Our layover in Frankfurt was 2 hours and 40 minutes, which initially felt a bit tight. But since our flight landed on time, we had enough time to transfer terminals and even explore a little bit.

Good to know: Indian passport holders with a valid US visa do not need a transit visa for Frankfurt, which makes things much easier.

We spent some time walking around the airport and picked up marzipan chocolates in three different flavors, which honestly made for such a fun and quick souvenir stop.

Final Thoughts: Is Lufthansa Worth It?

Overall, it was a comfortable and reliable experience. I really appreciated the chance to stretch and walk around during the layover before settling in for the longer second leg.

Would I fly Lufthansa again? If the pricing is competitive, absolutely yes.

I’d rate this experience a 4/5 for economy travel. It checks all the boxes for comfort, food, and smooth transit, even if it’s not the most luxurious option out there.
