But first, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of traveling with just a carry-on.

Pros:

travel-light-on-flight

  1. It is undoubtedly easy to carry and can fit anywhere from airplane cabins to tiny Bus or Rapid transit luggage bins.
  2. It saves a lot of time at the airport. You can directly head to the security queue without wasting a second at the bag drop counter.
  3. Your luggage is safe and under your surveillance 24×7.
  4. It saves you money as you can book cheap flights that allow carry-on bags only. Plus, you don’t have to worry about extra baggage charges.

Cons:

  1. You might have to face an extended security check.
  2. Your shoulder might give up at the end of your trip. However, you can rest up anytime you feel tired.

Now that you’re aware of all the pros and cons, let’s jump on to the seven steps that will help you to travel with just a carry-on bag.

1. Find the right carry-on backpack

Finding the right bag is essential, as this will define the rest of your process. Therefore, check the guidelines for the allowed dimensions of the carry-on bag. The permitted dimensions for most airlines are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches. However, I recommend checking before packing your carry-on.

2. Make a list of items you want to carry

By creating a list, you can assess necessary items for the particular trip and the ones you might consider letting go. What you’ll get is a concise list of things to carry.

3. Fold your clothes the right way

Folding clothes is an art. If done the right way, it saves a lot of space in your suitcase or a bag in our case. Therefore, instead of folding your clothes the usual way, try to roll your Tees and Denims. You can check this video where I fold my clothes to save space.

4. Organize your carry-on backpack

Organizers are a great way to save space in your bag and also keep similar products together. Use pouches or jute bags to keep stuff together, like keep all your wires in one pouch and cosmetics in another.

5. Make sure to carry liquids within the allowed range

All airlines allow 3.4 ounces (100 ml) of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes. Therefore, check the amount of liquid you add to your luggage while packing and try to be within the range or be prepared to get your items thrown off. Alternatively, you can go for these sustainable options that are great alternatives for liquids, pastes etc.

6. Carry reusable clothes for long-duration trips

Reusing your clothes and shoes is the best way to save space and be more efficient. If you’re traveling to a hot place, carry cotton clothes that take less space and are light. For winter destinations, take clothes that can be layered with each other but create different outfits every day.

7. Check the weight of your carry-on backpack before the trip

The most important step before leaving your house is to do a weight check to make sure it is within the allowed limit.
