If you think of Delhi as just another concrete jungle, you might be in for a surprise. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city lies a gem called Sanjay Van, a lush forested area offering a tranquil escape for nature enthusiasts.

Located in Mehrauli (near the Qutub Minar), this sprawling green expanse covers approximately 783 acres, providing a welcome respite from the concrete jungle that characterizes much of the national capital.

In this blog post, I’ll share some history, geography, and details of my recent experience visiting Sanjay Van. You can also watch my video, where I go on a hike.

History of Sanjay Van

Sanjay Van is a reserved forest area, part of Delhi’s ancient Aravallis and current-day South-Central Ridge. Named after Sanjay Gandhi, the son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the area underwent significant development in the late 1970s. It was part of an afforestation project, which evolved into a rich biodiversity hotspot.

The forest plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance by preventing soil erosion, supporting groundwater recharge, and serving as a habitat for various flora and fauna. Additionally, it is home to ancient ruins from the 12th Century, making it a desirable spot for history enthusiasts.

Reaching Sanjay Van

Given its proximity to key landmarks in Delhi, reaching Sanjay Van is easy. The nearest metro station is Saket or Qutub Minar (Yellow Line), and you can take an auto-rickshaw from the station to the entrance. If you are coming by car, you can find several designated MCD parking spaces to park safely.

Is Sanjay Van Haunted?

Let’s get the most popular questions on the internet out of our way. There have been reported sightings of a lady in a white saree and noises around the graves, but it is hard to determine the truth without experiencing it firsthand.

As someone who is not particularly fond of horror, I would advise against visiting this place at night. Not because it’s haunted or anything, but because you might accidentally interrupt the secret dance party that nocturnal critters throw. Trust me, you don’t want to be the one responsible for ruining their groove!

Is it safe to visit Sanjay Van alone?

Sanjay Van was notorious for being unsafe for a long time. It was a popular spot for goons taking shelter and mugging visitors. However, thanks to the measures taken by Delhi’s forest department, Sanjay Van has become a much safer place now. Nevertheless, I would still suggest going in groups as it would be more enjoyable and safer.

If you’re planning to visit Sanjay Van, here’s a list of places you can visit:

  1. Hauz Khas Village
  2. Qutub Minar
  3. Champagali

Things to do at Sanjay Van

Sanjay Van is one of the best places in Delhi to go on nature walks. I spotted more than 20 species of birds, insects, and wildlife during my visit.

As soon as you step into the forest, you will be greeted by the soothing sounds of birds chirping and squirrels scampering about. The well-maintained trails will take you through the tree canopy, small Aravali hills, and wetlands. Keep an eye out for birds and animals as you make your way through the forest. The biodiversity is astounding, with a wide variety of native plants, butterflies, and bird species to discover.

Picnic by the lake

Neela Hauz is a beautiful lake located in Sanjay Van. The lake has been recently restored and is now home to a variety of water birds and insects. It is a peaceful spot, perfect for watching sunsets, relaxing, or going on picnics. If you’re looking for a serene and picturesque place to spend some time in nature, Neela Hauz is definitely worth a visit.

Do’s and don’ts to remember

Respecting the natural environment is paramount when exploring natural areas. Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when you visit Sanjay Van.

  1. Stay on designated trails, as straying from paths can disturb the delicate ecosystem and harm native vegetation.
  2. Carry binoculars or cameras with a high zooming feature, as it will help maintain a respectful distance from the species while you observe them.
  3. Avoid littering, carry a small bag for your trash, and dispose of it properly when you leave. Litter can pose a threat to wildlife, causing infections and diseases.
  4. Keep noise levels to a minimum to appreciate the natural sounds of the forest and ensure you don’t disturb the wildlife.
  5. Practice Leave no trace to ensure you don’t disturb plants, animals, or their habitats.
  6. Carry reusables, plenty of water, and snacks to keep you well-fed and hydrated. However, avoid feeding wildlife, as human food can be harmful to them and a threat to humans.

Sanjay Van offers a unique blend of nature and historical significance. Whether you’re a birder, a fitness enthusiast, or seeking a peaceful escape from the daily hustle, this green oasis has something for everyone. Embrace the tranquility, respect the environment, and let Sanjay Van be your haven of nature in the bustling metropolis.
