It was the last day of our trip to Baja California Sur, a couple of hours to kill before the airport run, and we did what we always do when we don’t want a trip to end, we went back to the market one last time.
We were staying in San José del Cabo, and Los Tamarindos Coffee Roasters sits near La Playa, a 10-minute cab ride away. I’m glad we didn’t skip it. Of everything we did on this trip, this is the one I keep coming back to.
A Roastery That Feels Like Home

The place isn’t big or polished, and that’s exactly the point. It has a grounded, lived-in feel that instantly reminded me of the countryside mud houses back home in India, the kind where nothing is for show and everything has a story.
It’s run by the owner, David, who does the coffee tour himself. He welcomed us like old friends, sat us down at the coffee bar, and when we told him how much we love coffee, he lit up. He walked us through how he decided to bring beans all the way from Veracruz to Baja, a journey in itself, and you can taste how much he cares about it.

Veracruz, over on Mexico’s Gulf coast, is one of the country’s oldest and most respected coffee regions: high-altitude, volcanic soil, mostly shade-grown arabica. That terroir shows up in the cup: instead of the sharp, bitter roast you often get, these beans lean soft, earthy, and nutty, with a gentle acidity. It’s a completely different personality from the beans you’d usually find this far north in Baja.
The Coffee Tasting
David started us off with the different roasts in the café. We got to play with the beans, smell the freshly ground coffee (heavenly is not an exaggeration), and pick our favorites before he brewed a thing.
Then came the fun part. He took us through each step as he brewed, a pour over for Abhi (60 MXN), an iced latte for me (65 MXN). And honestly, I liked the black coffee more than the milky one, which never happens. I’m not usually a black coffee person. The notes were earthy rather than bitter, and somehow that changed my mind completely.

We took our time after that, wandered through the machines, admired the paintings on the walls, and just sat with our cups. Before we left, we grabbed a 250g bag of freshly roasted Garnica beans for 140 MXN to take a bit of the place home with us.

Would I Recommend It?
Without hesitation. If you’re a coffee fanatic and you find yourself in San José del Cabo, make the time for this one. It’s not a slick, Instagram-first café, it’s a real roastery run by someone who genuinely loves what he does, and that’s rarer than it should be. Trust me, it’s worth the detour!
