Finding a stay in downtown Portland that’s affordable, characterful, and walkable is harder than it sounds, most options are either soulless chain hotels or sketchy budget motels a long walk from anything.
The Society Hotel threads that needle, which is exactly why we’ve stayed here twice and keep picking it over other properties. But after two stays, I’ve got a more complete picture, the good and the not-so-good, so here’s the honest breakdown.
Why We Keep Coming Back
For us it comes down to two things: the location and the vibe. It sits right in the heart of Old Town/Chinatown, walkable to nearly everything we want to do in Portland. And there’s a genuine charm to the place that a cookie-cutter hotel just can’t replicate.
It’s also flexible depending on how you travel. Solo travelers can grab a dorm bunk, couples who don’t mind sharing bathrooms can book a private room, and if you want to splurge, there are suites. That range is rare in one property.
We paid $72.07 a night for a private room, which still feels fair for the location and character you’re getting.
A Bit of History
The Society Hotel is a historic-meets-hip boutique stay at 203 NW 3rd Avenue, originally built in 1881 as a sailors’ boarding home. That heritage shows up everywhere, the custom wooden bunks, the exposed detailing, the sense that the building has stories. Today it blends hostel-style bunks, private rooms, and upgraded suites under one roof.
The Room
Here’s where I’ll be honest: the private room is quite tiny. It had a floating shelf, a small basin, and just enough floor space for one suitcase and a bit of shuffling room. The bed nearly touched both walls, so it felt a little stuffy and boxed-in.
That said, the bed itself was comfortable and the bathrooms were clean. If elbow room is a priority, the suites (or a standard hotel) will serve you better. But for the price and the location, I still think it’s a fair trade, especially if you’ll be spending most of your time outside.
Amenities
This is where the property really shines, and it’s a big part of what you’re paying for.
- The Society Café & Bar – a lively ground-floor spot serving coffee, pastries, and signature cocktails. Great for working, lingering, or meeting other travelers.
- Rooftop deck – a beautifully decorated common area up top with panoramic views of downtown Portland. Easily one of my favorite spots in the building.
- Unbeatable location – you’re right in Old Town/Chinatown, steps from Court Square, about 400 meters from the Lan Su Chinese Garden, and an easy walk to Powell’s City of Books, plus countless cafés and restaurants. Overall thoughts
The Society Hotel is at its best if you’re a solo traveler on a workation or staycation who wants to meet people, work from a gorgeous café, and stay in the middle of the action. It’s also solid for longer stays if your work is downtown and you’re the one paying out of pocket.
If you’re a couple mainly after space and privacy, the tiny private rooms might feel snug, a suite or a standard hotel would give you more room to spread out. But for atmosphere, history, and an unbeatable location, The Society still wins me over every time.
