I’ve been to Portland a few times, one of the perks of living just three hours north of the city. We’ve usually stay at the Society Hotel, and once at Embassy Suites by Hilton 🎥 in downtown Portland. This summer, however, we wanted something a little different: a relaxing stay with a good view. That’s how we came across Holiday Inn Portland-Columbia Riverfront on Hayden Island.

If you’re wondering where Hayden Island is? This is a tiny island that sits in the Columbia River between Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, connecting the two states by a bridge.

A comfortable bed and a view of the Columbia River turned out to be my favorite things about our stay. The river, especially, was the highlight. There’s something about having water in view that makes a hotel stay feel a little less ordinary. With nearby restaurants, a large parking lot, and enough activities to keep us entertained on the property, there was plenty to like.

Here’s a complete review of out stay, what stood out, the good and the not-so-good parts.

The Columbia River View

I started with the view is because it was easily the most memorable part of my stay. While a comfortable room is important, looking out at the Columbia River gave the experience something extra.

If you’re considering this hotel for the same reason, pay attention to the room description when booking. Don’t assume every room comes with the view you’re imagining; confirm the room category before reserving. My room was tennis court facing but beyond that was the river and we enjoyed our evening strolls by the river thoroughly.

The Lobby and Amenities

The hotel describes itself as a newly renovated, resort-style property, and you can feel that as soon as you walk in. The lobby is modern, open and relaxed, more like a riverside getaway than a quick stop off the freeway. Once you’re settled, there’s plenty to do without leaving the property:

  • A huge pool – The outdoor pool is a big draw, and there’s a hot tub nearby. The pool is seasonal, so check that it’s open before you go if swimming matters to you.
  • Pickleball and tennis courts – The riverside courts let you stay active while enjoying the view. You can borrow equipment from the front desk.
  • A fitness center – It has cardio and training equipment if you want to keep up your routine.
  • An on-site restaurant and bar – Jantzen Beach Bar + Grill serves Pacific Northwest dishes. We didn’t eat there, so I can’t speak to the food. There are also plenty of restaurants nearby.
  • Large parking lot – This was a practical win. Parking can be one of the most annoying parts of a trip, and having plenty of room made arriving and leaving easy.

The Room: Spacious, With a Balcony

Standard Room with Two Queen Beds Holiday Inn Portland

Our room was a Standard Room with Two Queen Beds. The room was spacious, which made the stay feel relaxed rather than cramped and the bed was comfortable. That sounds basic, but a good night’s sleep is one of the things that matters most when you’re away from home.

Every room comes with a balcony, and that’s what made the stay special. Stepping outside to look at the Columbia River across the court was the best part of our stay.

The bathroom was big and well equipped with everything you’d need, so getting ready never felt like a squeeze. The hotel’s modern rooms and roomy bathroom made it easy to settle in.

Little Things That Didn’t Quite Land

  • Breakfast wasn’t included – Our stay didn’t include free breakfast, which was disappointing. Included breakfast makes mornings easier and affects the total cost of a stay. Whether breakfast is included can depend on the rate you book, so check before you reserve.
  • Leaving IDs for pickleball equipment – It was great to have pickleball equipment available. However, the front desk kept our IDs while we were using it. I understand that the hotel wants the equipment returned, but I wasn’t comfortable leaving my ID behind just to borrow paddles. If that would bother you too, ask about the process ahead of time or bring your own gear.
  • An awkward welcome choice – At check-in, staff asked whether we wanted a welcome gift or 500 points. The choice felt a little odd. Instead of feeling like a warm welcome, it was one more decision to make before we’d even settled in, and neither option felt especially exciting. It wasn’t a big issue, but small moments like this shape how welcome you feel.

My Overall Take

bridge view from the hotel

My stay at Holiday Inn Portland-Columbia Riverfront was comfortable, and the Columbia River view from our balcony was the clear highlight. The spacious room, big bathroom, renovated lobby, large parking lot and on-site activities all added to the appeal. Plus, it’s just 10 minutes drive from downtown Portland, so you get to stay away from the downtown’s hustle and bustle while being not too far.

If you want a riverside hotel with roomy accommodations and plenty to do on-site, it’s worth considering. Before booking, check whether your rate includes breakfast and whether the seasonal pool is open.

For me, the river view from the balcony was what made this stay memorable.
